When Bogart was the Man

The youth of today have no idea who Bogart is.  Well they think its a slang term for someone who does not share their food or pot.  But in reality, Humphrey Bogart was the man for decades.  His ability cold hard demeanor was what set Hollywood standards for years to follow.  We don't have anyone even close to him today.
Some might say George Clooney is a Bogart want to be and I might agree.  But Clooney's cool monotone speech looses out to the quick violent tone that Bogart was able to turn off and on in the blink of an eye.
Bogart was cool before we knew what cool was.  Before Sinatra and the Rat Pack revealed it and thought they branded it.  Today, cool is so over used and abused that it has lost all its relevance to our society.  People think politics are cool, really?  Have you seen Sarah Palin lately or our inept Congress?
So what is cool?  Personally I have a question as to what is cool?  I mean the term "cool" has been so undermined, bastardized and abused since cool was cool, it is hard to keep track.
Lets look at the term and what it was originally set up to mean.  Cool was the younger persons way (if you believe the original origin of the 70's hit t.v. show Happy Days) of saying something is nice.  But over the past few decades, Nice has evolved to cool and then cool became "Bad" in the 70's which then become "gnarly" in the 80's to be replace with the "bomb" in the 90's followed by "hot" in the 2000's and now cool has evolved into, well I am getting to old to be allowed into that circle of young hip kids to be worthy of their lingo.
There was always the off shoots to, those flash in the pan, quick one season wonders that made the t-shirt market....I mean some even sparked off into quick sound bits into movies and showed up as even iconic cultural mentions that specifically dates a time period.
Just as an example, if you were old enough to remember the budlight commercial from the mid-90's......"whatzzzzz upppppp."  While that was more of a greeting, bit was also a way to say things are cool when you replied repeating the same greeting.
So what is my point, nothing.  Because if I am trying to make one, that would not be cool.

False celebrities

We have enough actors and actresses out there don't we? I mean look at all of them, theirs thousands. I mean we all know Deniro, Nickelson, Pitt, etc..all the high end celebrities and then of course there is all the sports celebrities and news celebrities, but now we have this entire new in breed of pseudo celebrities that are only celebrities because they star of reality shows that well, require no acting or athletic ability. It requires no memorization of lines or athletic ability to run down a field and catching a ball thrown slightly slower than the speed of light. They just have to be rude, crude, obnoxious, and have the cooth of an egg fart in church. They bring nothing to the entertainment world except to fill the reality gap in some peoples lives.
But if that were not enough that these pseudo celebrities were walking down the red carpet as if they were up for an academy award, an honor only bestowed on REAL celebrity actors, directors, writers and makers of movies but yet these failures of screen and life are now plastered all over the media as if they did something, but the caption always reads the gossip on....... or the other is ......... was arrested again. These are not celebrities, these are the anti-role models for our children and future.
Now some will argue that these people are artists and I just don't understand what they are bringing to the world in the form of their art.... This may be true, I don't claim to be an artist, unless I am swinging a 20 pound chainsaw around. All I know is there needs to be a fine, no a very thick line drawn and actually since our country is in the mood to build a fence, lets keep another one that separates our real celebrities from these one hit wonder, flavor of the month tabloid page fillers.
Lets bring some decency and glamor back to Hollywood and the entertainment industry.

Politics and Football

Has our political system dissolved to the point that we can no longer do what is best for the people of this country versus political stubbornness and egos? Our present political process is more like the NFL, its no longer about doing what is right for the people, but more about blocking and tackling the progress of anything that will help get our nation out of the mess were in.
Its past the time for the blame game. Lets leave that for the historians, but right now we need a star quarterback to step into the game and lead us to victory. We need our offensive line to block the bad guys from attacking our QB, but instead our own offense live is turning and rushing our own guys.
Lets remember, were all on the same team. The Senate and Congress are there to protect not only the QB, but also the team. Were all in this together. We elected this QB, he won the starting position, and now we have to work together to get our team down the field and into the end zone. Its time for our QB to grab the linemen by the face masks and tell them to get their heads in the game, put away their own agendas, the season is going on and we need to win this one for all the gyppers out there.

35 Years after Jaws Splashed on the Screen

Don't know about you but I am man enough now to admit it, but the summer that Steven Spielberg's released his future academy award winning blockbuster based on the best selling Peter Benchley novel, it ruined my summer in Southern California. Years previous to the release, I would spend my boy hood summers on the beaches and in the semi-warm pacific ocean of Southern California. But then that movie came out. What made it worse and embed the terror and horror into my future nightmares and phobias was the fact that it was such a hit that I saw it five times in two weeks. Not that I wanted to be terrified so often, but because first my older brother Floyd took me to see it, then my other older brother Randy, then my Mother, then my other older brother Fred, then finally I had to go see it with my friends (because I could not chicken out). To add saltwater to the wound, the next day we were off to Newport Beach. It was fourth of July weekend.
That summer, I would visit the beach several times, but each time was only wetting the ankles and if I did venture out with a boogie board, I was riding the first wave into the shore. What was the reason? Well not only did that movie insight the fear of the deep dark ocean into my conscience, but within days of the release of this mega hit, a mega Great White Shark, well 13 footer was caught off the southern California coast, then the next day, a surfer was attacked by a Great White Shark (Robert Rebstock). During the summer of 75, three or four large Great Whites were caught off the coast. I believe the final one was 17 feet long and two full grown seals were found in its belly. But also, two more shark attacks made the front page of the local papers.
For years, I had fears of the ocean, the great jaws coming from the bottom and dragging my body to a horrible bloody death. I even was afraid of swimming in a dark swimming pool for years. But as time has gone on, the fear became my quest to overcome it. Years later I would not only overcome the fear, but embrace the creatures and their home. I learned to scuba dive and would enjoy diving at night. My favorite place to dive was Sharks Cove, Hawaii and even swam with my first shark there.
While the movie may seem cheesy at this point in our cinema technology level, for those of us who lived through the Summer of Jaws, it was a classic and an thank you Steven and Peter for causing us all to get sunburned, rather than attacked by the sharks.
